Catching Up….

I realised this afternoon that it has been nearly a month since I blogged. To be honest I’m not sure where the time has gone really…actually I do. Work is busy, training has stepped up a bit now I’m (virtually) injury free and we’re into tri season and I’m also helping to run the DLRR MultiSport group which we set up at the start of the year. At home we’re still renovating, so living in a constant mess and ongoing DIY plus the little man is an amazing time filler upper – who needs to train when running around after him is as good for you as any interval session!

So what have I been up to since the MK Marathon?

The swimathon was brutal – 5km in a pool is no laughing matter. 200 lengths up and down – mind numbing…After 3 and half km I nearly threw in the towel as my shoulder was killing me (dislocated it 20 years ago, then broke it three years ago – never quite recovered from either!) but I finally got there in the end in just a touch over 1:38 – just a tad under 2 mins per hundred which I was really pleased about. But, I know I will never swim that kind of distance in one go in the pool again – life’s too short!

I took a few weeks off after the swimathon, just took it easy with a few little runs. After two marathons and the swim a little bit on R&R was needed and it seems to have worked. I’m out on the bike a bit more – not as much as I wanted at this stage but I’m’ already at the level I was last year on only a few short rides so hopefully a bit more to come later in the season. I’ve done a couple of interval run sessions and it’s slowly starting to come together. My flat speed over shorter distances 5km -5m seems to be improving with two 5 mile pbs in less than a week followed by my quickest ever club handicap run so I thought I’d have a bash at my local Parkrun on Saturday and came away with second place and a PB of over 30 seconds. I’m looking towards the MK Half on July 7th so with a 15 mile run on the training plan I thought a little jaunt to Stanwick Lakes would make 13 of those in a race go a bit quicker – but I was about 6 miles into it and there was nothing in the tank – perhaps three races in four days was a step too far! As a race it was ok – flat and fast but not the best organised event I’ve ever been to, although the medal at the end was nice.

I’ve also taken part in my first duathlon, run by Votwo Events at the famous Silverstone F1 circuit. I only live down the road from it so the opportunity to ride around the circuit on my bike was too much of a draw. I really enjoyed it although the wind around that place was unbelievable – I reckon two thirds of the route was into the wind.

On the injury front my knee is still niggling a bit – I’m pretty sure it’s the infamous ‘Runner Knee’, I had it several years ago so am self managing it at the moment and it seems ok.

So, that’s a bit of a quick round up of the last month or so which now leads me to my future plans..but I’ll leave that for the next post!

Training for Week 14

So the taper begins. The next three weeks will be all about reducing mileage but maintaining frequency and intensity. So similar pattern as previous weeks but with fewer miles. Might swap the days around a bit dependent upon how I’m feeling. The midweek runs are still similar to before but the long run on Sunday will be much less than usual. I might have a go at the MK parkrun on Saturday to keep some speed in the legs.

Monday – rest – the legs need it!

Tuesday  – 6m (with 6x800m)

Wednesday – 6m slow

Thursday  – 7 mile steady

Friday – stretching

Saturday – parkrun

Sunday – 12-15 miles
